Bacteria have been observed to change shape when exposed to antibiotics. These morphological changes can have important implications for bacterial survival, where they might help to identify the beginning of the cell death process (e.g. by forming bulges) or that the bacteria may avoid being killed (e.g. by filamentation). However, relatively little quantification of these changes has been performed. This project involves the use of an existing time-lapse imaging dataset of antibiotic-exposed bacteria. Both images series and a smaller set of time-lapse videos are available for analysis. Potential directions for the project include:
1) analysis of cell morphology counts over time on datasets using an exisiting pipeline to generate a pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic model
2) bacteria video/image analysis, such as quantification of filamentous bacterial growth/elongation
This project may appeal to someone with interest/experience in image analysis, machine learning, pharmacodynamics, or video analysis.
The work will be carried out in Uppsala, however in a research group, that offers an international environment. The working language, including supervision, will be English.
