In our recent work, we have isolated an extremely stable class of disulfide-rich peptides, that we have named ‘stryphnins’ from Stryphnus fortis, a marine sponge from the North Atlantic. Stryphnins represent molecular scaffolds with potential utility as a drug delivery framework, due to their remarkable biological stability. The current project is aimed at studying the tissue distribution of stryphnins as well as their ability to transport across the blood-brain barrier. For this purpose, a bioanalytical method will be developed for the detection of stryphnins in rat plasma and brain homogenate and the pharmacokinetics of the peptides will be studied further in rats. The project will be jointly supervised by Dr. Sunithi Gunasekera, Pharmacognosy, Dept of Pharmaceutical Biosciences, Dr. Irena Loryan, translational PKPD group, Dept of Pharmacy and Dr. Helena Idborg, Department of Medicine, Karolinksa Instituet.
The work will be carried out in Uppsala, however in a research group, that offers an international environment. The working language, including supervision, will be English.
