Beskrivning

Background
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections, affecting millions worldwide each year. Managing UTIs, especially in specific populations like young women, elderly women, and pregnant women, presents unique challenges. The rise of antibiotic resistance complicates treatment, necessitating thorough evaluation of current therapeutic options. This project aims to conduct a systematic literature review and meta-analysis to assess the efficacy of specific antibiotic treatments for UTIs and compare their effectiveness to other commonly used antibiotics. The specific patient group, antibiotic, and possibly geographical area will be defined by the student. The thesis must be written in English.

Methodology
1. Systematic Literature Review:
- Develop a search strategy to identify relevant studies from databases such as PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase.
- Include studies evaluating the efficacy of chosen antibiotics in treating UTIs in the selected patient group, infection type, and/or geographical area.
2. Data Extraction and Quality Assessment:
- Extract relevant data, including patient characteristics, treatment regimens, and outcomes.
- Assess study quality using tools like the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool or the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale.
3. Meta-Analysis:
- Perform a meta-analysis to synthesize data and compare the efficacy and safety profiles of the chosen antibiotics.
- Conduct subgroup analyses to explore variations in treatment efficacy based on patient characteristics and type of UTI.

Expected Results
The project is expected to provide a comprehensive synthesis of existing evidence on the efficacy of specific antibiotics in different patient groups. We anticipate identifying populations that may benefit more from certain treatments and highlighting the impact of antibiotic resistance on outcomes. The findings will contribute to optimizing UTI management strategies and support evidence-based clinical decision-making. This project will also provide students with valuable experience in conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses, developing skills in data extraction, quality assessment, and statistical analysis essential for clinical research in pharmaceutical microbiology.
