HT25
Background
Migraine is very prevalent and disabling, affecting the daily lives of millions worldwide. People with metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes and obesity often experience migraine more frequently, suggesting a deeper connection between these disorders. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a hormone that regulates blood sugar and appetite, may be a key factor. Medications that enhance GLP-1 activity are already used to treat diabetes and obesity, and preliminary findings indicate they could potentially reduce migraine severity and frequency, possibly by influencing neuropeptides like CGRP and reducing inflammation.
Aim
This project will use extensive data from the UK Biobank to investigate:
1. Whether GLP-1 receptor agonists (e.g., liraglutide, semaglutide) are associated with fewer or less severe migraine.
2. How these medications might affect CGRP levels, a crucial molecule in migraine pathophysiology.
3. Whether natural GLP-1 levels in the body correlate with migraine occurrence, duration, and intensity.
Methods
• Data Source: The UK Biobank, a large-scale repository containing health, genetic, and biomarker data on approximately 500,000 participants.
• General Approach: We will compare migraine patterns in individuals taking GLP-1 receptor agonists with those who do not, assess CGRP levels among users of GLP-1 therapies, and examine whether elevated or reduced GLP-1 levels predict migraine outcomes. We will consider important covariates such as age, sex, lifestyle factors, and metabolic status.
Projektets upplägg kräver studentens närvaro på plats måndag till fredag under hela arbetsdagen. Detta för att säkerställa full delaktighet i det dagliga arbetet och möjliggöra ett nära samarbete med projektgruppen.
