Using electrochemistry to achieve efficient and sustainable protocols for the synthesis of drug-relevant compounds

Beskrivning

The practice of medicinal chemistry involves the design of novel synthetic protocols that can enable access to biologically active compounds with the overall aim of discovering new therapeutics for the treatment of disease. In the group of Assoc. Prof. Oscar Verho, electrons (in the form of an electrical current) are being explored as green reagents for the synthesis of various valuable chemical compounds. In this particular project, the focus will be on the design of new C-H functionalization reactions that can be used to access drug-relevant compounds and synthetic intermediates. C-H functionalizations are a reaction type, where carbon-hydrogen bonds are directly transformed into other valuable bonds such as carbon-carbon, carbon-oxygen or carbon-halogen bonds, which both saves time and reduces the waste generated compared to other alternative synthetic strategies.

As part of our the Verho group, you will be introduced to various aspects of practical laboratory work, database searching and gain hands-on experience with analytical techniques such as HPLC-MS, NMR spectroscopy, as well as state-of-the-art electrochemistry methods. Electrochemistry has in recent years emerged as a transformative technology within both academic and industrial synthetic organic chemistry researcg, and knowledge about this technique will be of major use in a variety of future chemistry career. We are looking for enthusiastic and inquisitive students to join us and work with us towards the ultimate goal of designing a completely new synthetic methodology that eventually can be communicated in the form of a scientific publication.

All written submissions and oral presentations are conducted in English.
