Medfarm Play

For about two millennia, medicine was dominated by the ideas of humoral pathology and the direct connection between the body and its environment. Ideas about harmful fumes and airs significantly influenced how modern societies were built and many advances in public health, before the bacteriological paradigm led to new notions of hygiene and disease etiology.
In the past century, the view on the relationship between health and environment has changed again as health concerns have become part of political movements for environmental protection. At the same time, several grassroots movements have appeared around illness and the environment. Many of the illnesses in question are or have been contested in the medical community. I will present examples of laypeople organizing around shared illnesses and how medical science is understood, challenged, and generated in the public sphere.
